Explorer Systems

The deep space explorer ship Distant Suns, under the command of Captain David Crawford, has just returned from it's fourth mission. The results of mission Delta are now listed, along with the 100 systems explored in each of the first three missions, Alpha, Beta, and Gamma.

Alpha
Alpha 25 is of particular interest, as there is a fully civilized, intelligent race, on the first planet. The planet itself is singularly unique, as it's day lasts 2210 hours, or 92 Earth days long, yet it's entire year is 18 1/4 days long. The end result is that for each rotation of the planet (one day), it circles the sun five times... each "day" is five years long! In other ways, the planet is a dream, only 1/3 of a G, and winter and summer temperatures of 3 to 16 degrees. The only possible drawback is it's thin atmosphere, roughly 1/2 that of Earth.

Alpha 50, 51, and 57 are rare, in that each system has FIVE suns.

A perfect planet for colonization is Alpha 10, planet 5. It's a 10,000Km, 2/3 of a G, standard atmosphere, and -31 to +5 temperatures.

Alpha 45, planet 1, has a near intelligent race, on a very nice, 1/4 G, world where the temperature averages a balmy 12 to 41 degrees.

Beta
Beta 5, planet #2 would be suitable for colonization, with environmental controls. The wide temperature swing from a icy -37 winter average, to a sweltering 36 summer temperature, caused by its elliptical orbit, is all that mars this 2/3 G planet. Positioned 1 AU from a GV star, it provides a year that is .95 standard Earth years. The day however, is over 71 hours long, which accounts for it's wild temperature swings. Proceed with caution though, as there are lower life forms existing on this planet, and though small, are quite hostile.

Beta 5, planet #3 is actually INSIDE planet 2's orbit for alot of the year due to its neighbour's elliptic orbit. This .95 G planet with it's 14.5 PSI oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere has a 19 hour day, and 0.83 year. The relatively mild temperatures (-12 to -1) make this a dream, if it had life. Definitely a possibility for seeding!

If you are looking for a nitrogen atmosphere, then Beta 14 #3 can't be beat!

If you are humanoid though, then Beta 19 #3 is perfect. This 12,000 Km diameter planet is a touch over 1 Au from a yellow main-sequence star. The 13.4 PSI oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere that blankets this dream-world in a pink haze, keeps it a pleasant 24 degrees during the summer, with a winter temperature of only -6! The 2/3 of a G gravity will put bounce in your step, and let you stay up and enjoy the full 34 hour day! The animals found on this planet are all tame and friendly, and have just the right amount of "cuteness" factor. It's hard to beat this planet, and colonization and settling is bound to happen fast!!
